Windscreen – Windscreen Hope in Part 2
Some months down the road from the previous windscreen replacement, in a different car, the same thing happens again. A sudden loud”twack”and a nasty crack on the windscreen (in a different car this time). This becomes more bothersome the more attached your are to the car you drive – so I had no intention of leaving it in place and was looking for the fastest way to fix it.
As you may have also read in my earlier blog, there are problems that can result from having a new windscreen fitted, including leaks and other issues such as glass quality being different from the original that came with the car. So I was naturally upset that I had to go through the hassle of another screen replacement.

So, though I’m usually not to happy with getting SMS adverts, I was very glad to get an SMS advertising windscreen repairs. Having vaguely heard in the past of chemical based windscreen repairs before, I called to check and found that the SMS sender providing the service did indeed not mean replacement of the screen but repair of the chip or crack. I was curious as to the process and booked an appointment, wanting to validate his claims and see the claimed results.
Its a process that is as time saving as it is painless to undergo!

First, a small hole is drilled at a central position at the site of the crack for the repair chemical to flow into the crevices. This can be a little worrisome to look upon and it reminds me of a visit to the dentist. But just as the dentist is good for you, so this is also good for your car. That’s because an unattended crack will spread and may become irreparable.

The drilling is necessary for the chemical to seep into and penetrate through the cracks for a better repair. After the drilling, a strange contraption is attached to the glass via suction and mechanical plunger sits atop the glass over the crack, applying pressure to the chemical mixture to cause it to seep into the cracks.
Once that is achieved, the chemical mix is then cured using UV light for a permanent fix – the crack will widen no more and if any signs of it remain, it is all but invisible except under bright sunlight.
And there it’s done!

Compared to a full replacement, which can take days before the correct part arrives at the workshop, and a hours to remove and fit, the repair took but 40 minutes for me and was so easy as the repairman came to my doorstep.
